Govt Model School Students Dazzle with Extracurricular Talents on Children's Day

Last Sunday, more than 70 students from government model schools in Chennai took the stage to celebrate Children's Day with a vibrant display of their extracurricular talents. The event featured a range of performances, including mime shows, classical dance, and thought-provoking street plays.

The students, who had previously won accolades at state-level competitions, were hand-picked to participate in the celebrations. A standout performance was a street play that portrayed the struggles of a Sri Lankan Tamil family migrating to Tamil Nadu due to civil unrest in their home country. Another powerful act was a group mime show that highlighted the cruelty of honor killings in the name of caste or religion.

The event also featured traditional art forms like 'Parai aattam' and 'Therukoothu', which the students used to call for the revival of dying street arts. Additionally, the students staged a demonstration of community radio, emphasizing the need to disseminate sensible and critical information to the public.

"Besides teaching them the art form, students are taught to convey a social message and develop rational thinking. This will help them become better citizens in the future," said Sivabalan, a trainer.
