In the village of Priol, Goa, a set of ancient stone sculptures, known as Barazan, serves as a memorial to individuals who sacrificed their lives to protect honor. Located in a horticultural field, these revered stones have a rich cultural history.
Historian Anant Sinai Dhume documented one stela bearing a Sumerian symbol and a depiction of a woman worshipping a Shiva linga. Locals believe twelve sculptures originally formed the Barazan site.
Each year, during the tenth lunar month of Paush, elders from the Satarkar community perform rituals, including offerings of liquor and rice flour pancakes. Archaeologists estimate the artistic style of the sculptures, which show figures in motion, to be from the 14th and 15th centuries.
The presence of similar memorial sites in nearby villages underscores the archaeological significance of the region, highlighting ancient Goan traditions of heroism, battle scenes, and sati commemorations.
