Gloucester is embarking on a year-long initiative to revitalize its high street by transforming vacant shop spaces into temporary art galleries. The project, named Meanwhile in Gloucester, is being spearheaded by the arts organisation Gasp (Gloucester Arts and Social Projects).
This free program promises a series of art events and exhibitions, developed in collaboration with local residents. Arts Council England is supporting this endeavor with an £84,300 National Lottery Project Grant, recognizing a need to boost cultural engagement in the city.
The initiative will see Gasp establish an art gallery and three studios for emerging artists within the Eastgate Shopping Centre. This space will then host activities involving local creatives and young people, aiming to spark conversations and foster in-person connections.
Research from the University of Gloucestershire highlighted the potential of utilizing empty spaces to revitalize town centers. Gasp's previous projects have successfully turned unused locations into vibrant cultural hubs, with feedback indicating a strong resident desire for more contemporary art and creative participation opportunities.
