Global Writers Guild Unites in India for Historic Summit

On October 3, 2025, it was announced that the Screenwriters Association (SWA) of India will be hosting the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the International Affiliation of Writers Guilds (IAWG) in Mumbai from October 6-8. This historic event marks the first time the global writers' guild summit is taking place in India.

The three-day conference will bring together representatives from prestigious guilds such as the Writers Guild of America (West & East), Writers' Guild of Great Britain, Writers Guild of Canada, as well as delegates from European, Australian, New Zealand, Latin American, African, and Asian guilds. They will engage in enlightening discussions on the urgent challenges faced by screenwriters worldwide, including the fight for fair pay, residuals/royalties, creative rights, and protection from exploitation.

"This is a moment of international solidarity," said Anjum Rajabali, Senior Writer and SWA Committee Member. "Writers everywhere face common struggles, but multinational studios and streaming platforms often treat those in the Global South differently. This modern-day cultural colonialism must be confronted."

The AGM aims to develop strategies for ensuring equitable contracts across borders and sharing best practices from recent guild negotiations globally, such as the 2023 WGA Strike. The event underscores India's Screenwriters Association as a leading trade union, championing the rights and interests of storytellers in the country's thriving entertainment industry.
