The Red Dress project, an extraordinary collaborative embroidery endeavor, was completed in 2023 after 14 years of global participation. This monumental artwork has officially been recognized by Guinness World Records 2026 as the largest collaborative embroidery project ever undertaken.
Initiated in 2009 by British textile artist Kirstie Macleod, the project aimed to explore identity and connect women across borders. The dress is composed of 87 burgundy silk dupion pieces, which were sent to 380 embroiderers in 51 countries. Approximately 97% of these contributors were women, including refugees, asylum seekers, and victims of conflict.
Each woman embroidered a piece of her personal story and cultural heritage into the dress, which features millions of stitches. The project has been touring museums and galleries worldwide since its completion and was slated for display at the United Nations in Geneva in 2026.
Kirstie Macleod's 2025 book, "The Red Dress: Conversations in Stitch," further explores the project's narrative and the women involved. The article itself was originally published four years prior to the current date and has since been updated.
