However, Powell's performance was widely praised, contributing to a more favorable audience score of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, in contrast to its 43% critical rating.

Inspired by the 1949 film 'Kind Hearts and Coronets,' John Patton Ford directed and wrote 'How to Make a Killing.' The movie's resurgence on streaming is attributed to factors such as its "eat the rich" theme and Powell's growing star power.
