- Dispute centers on daughters' residency between Hong Kong and the US.

Gleb Savchenko is seeking temporary sole legal and physical custody of his 15-year-old daughter, Olivia, amidst an escalating custody battle with ex-wife Elena Samodanova. Savchenko recently filed court documents, including screenshots, which he claims support an emergency custody request. These screenshots allegedly indicate Samodanova's phone pinged in Moscow and show a WhatsApp exchange discussing her travel to Russia for a family funeral, with their younger daughter Zlata accompanying her. Savchenko asserts he did not consent to this trip due to safety concerns.
The primary contention revolves around the daughters' residency, initially a temporary arrangement in Hong Kong. Savchenko alleges Samodanova overstayed an agreed-upon return date to the U.S. and has since built a permanent life there, including enrolling the children in private school and having another child with her fiancé. This situation, he claims, has forced him to travel internationally to see his daughters.
Samodanova denies Savchenko's version of events, stating Hong Kong is Olivia's permanent home. She contends Savchenko is wrongfully detaining Olivia in California after canceling her return flight. Samodanova highlighted Olivia's thriving life in Hong Kong, including her elite schooling and ballroom dancing achievements. She views Savchenko's emergency filing as a hasty attempt to circumvent legal processes and has requested a continuance to present her case through proper channels.
Currently, Olivia is with Savchenko in California, and he claims she wishes to remain in Los Angeles County and not return to Hong Kong. Savchenko has also reportedly filed a Hague Convention petition for Zlata's return. Samodanova maintains that Hong Kong holds jurisdiction over the custody dispute. The ex-couple has been ordered to attend mediation on August 5th, with a formal hearing to follow.
