The documentary "Everybody to Kenmure Street" chronicles a significant act of civil resistance that occurred in Glasgow's Pollokshields district in May 2021. When U.K. Home Office officials attempted a dawn raid to deport two Sikh men, local residents spontaneously gathered, swelling to hundreds. This peaceful solidarity flooded Kenmure Street, creating an eight-hour stand-off that prevented the deportation and garnered international attention.
Filmmaker Felipe Bustos Sierra, based in Scotland, utilized crowd-sourced footage from the event, archive film, and staged scenes with actors portraying anonymous testimonies. The film explores themes of solidarity in a divided world, with executive producer Emma Thompson describing it as an "urgent film" that showcases the "innate and deep decency of our people."
Emma Thompson also plays a surprising role, portraying the individual who lay under the deportation van to halt its movement. Other Scottish actresses, Kate Dickie and Keira Lucchesi, are also featured. Thompson's involvement stemmed from a prior positive reception to Bustos Sierra's earlier film about Scottish solidarity.
Initially a local event that gained global traction, the film's subject matter remains relevant due to ongoing discussions about immigration. The film premiered at Sundance and opened the Glasgow Film Festival, with plans for wider cinema releases. The director is also exploring a fictionalized account of another Scottish protest for his next project.
