Girl Ultra: From Fan to Funk Collaborator

Girl Ultra, a Mexico City artist, has released her latest album, RRRomeo, a notable collaboration with Dave 1 from the funk duo Chromeo. The project represents a full-circle moment for Girl Ultra, who as a teenager admired Chromeo's music. She once snuck into shows, now she's creating music with one of its members.

Dave 1 first encountered Girl Ultra's music around 2017-2018, connecting through social media. The collaboration began during the pandemic when Dave 1 proposed working together. Initially envisioned as an R&B-funk project, Girl Ultra steered the direction towards a broader soundscape.

RRRomeo features a diverse mix of analog funk, synth-pop, darkwave, dub, and tropical textures. It reflects the chaotic beauty of Mexico City nightlife. Dave 1 entrusted Girl Ultra with Pro Tools sessions and stems, allowing her to infuse the music with her distinct, darker artistic instincts and influences from her upbringing, which included rock, pop, and Mexican music.

The album explores themes of desire, deception, and romance, with tracks like "El Groove de Romeo" and "MentirasMentiras." "Denisse" tells a narrative story inspired by a friend's experience. Girl Ultra views RRRomeo as a way to reclaim physical desire, contrasting it with modern nightlife's perceived self-consciousness and over-reliance on curated online personas.

The album's visual aesthetic emphasizes unapologetic intimacy, exemplified by the cover art featuring a four-hour make-out session. Girl Ultra aims to embrace the "feral part of wanting" and encourage public displays of affection.
