Gillian Anderson Feels Betrayed by 'Salt Path' Claims

Gillian Anderson, who portrays Raynor Winn in the film adaptation of "The Salt Path," has spoken out about allegations that the memoir was fabricated, describing the situation as a "betrayal." Anderson expressed disappointment, stating that she and co-star Jason Isaacs had spent time with Winn and her husband.

The controversy emerged after an investigation by The Observer suggested certain claims in Winn's 2018 memoir were misrepresented. Specifically, the investigation questioned the circumstances under which Winn and her husband, Moth, lost their home. Winn has refuted these claims, calling the article "highly misleading" and stating the dispute with Martin Hemmings did not lead to their homelessness.

Despite the UK controversy, "The Salt Path" film is scheduled for release in the United States on September 4, 2026. Anderson noted that the allegations surfaced just as they were finalizing a deal with Sony Classics for the US distribution. Jason Isaacs also commented on the situation, calling publicity for the US release "interesting" but supporting the film's artistic merit.

Further scrutiny has been placed on Winn's past writings, including claims that "The Salt Path" was her debut novel. However, it has been revealed she previously published a book under an alias, and a prize draw intended to help her win back her home was cancelled. Penguin, the publisher, stated they conducted necessary due diligence before publication and had received no prior concerns.
