Iraqi calligrapher Ali Zaman has dedicated six years to creating a colossal handwritten Quran manuscript, a testament to his devotion and craft. The finished masterpiece comprises 302 double-sided scrolls, each an impressive 4 meters long and 1.5 meters wide, crafted from custom-made parchment-like sheets.
Zaman, who was born in Iraq, moved his family to Istanbul in 2017 to focus on this project, believing the art of calligraphy is more highly valued in Turkey. He worked diligently from dawn to dusk in a room at the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque.
This monumental Quran is being presented as potentially the world's largest, though it has not yet received official confirmation from record-keeping bodies. Zaman's ultimate hope is for the manuscript to be acquired by a collector or institution that will ensure its public display and appreciation.
