In the lead-up to the German theatrical release of Fatih Akin's drama "Amrum" by Warner Bros. on Thursday, Beta Cinema has announced a series of new international distribution deals for the film.
"Amrum," which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year, has been acquired for distribution in several key markets, including Australia and New Zealand (Palace Films), India (Big Tree Entertainment), Latin America (Synapse Distribution), and various European countries such as Portugal (Pris Audiovisuais), Scandinavia (Angel Films), Italy (BIM Distribuzione), Greece (Rosebud.21), Turkey (Filmarti), and Ukraine (Svoekino). Earlier this year, the film also secured deals for North America (Kino Lorber), France (Dulac Distribution), Spain (A Contracorriente), Japan (Bitters End), and Benelux (Cherry Pickers).
According to Dirk Schürhoff, managing director of Beta Cinema, these widespread distribution deals "reflect the film's universal appeal." He cites the outstanding cast, the emotional and relevant story, and the unique directorial style of acclaimed German filmmaker Fatih Akin as factors that have made "Amrum" one of the best-selling German films of the year.
The poignant and visually arresting drama follows 12-year-old Nanning as he unravels his family's secret in the final weeks of World War II on the secluded island of Amrum. Based on true events, the film stars newcomer Jasper Billerbeck alongside a talented ensemble, including Laura Tonke, Lisa Hagmeister, Kian Köppke, Matthias Schweighöfer, and Diane Kruger.
