Matthew Macfadyen has taken on the legendary role of George Smiley in the upcoming espionage thriller series, "Legacy of Spies." Filming for the eight-part series has now concluded. The show draws inspiration from John le Carré's classic novel "The Spy Who Came in From the Cold" and his 2017 book "A Legacy of Spies."
Charlie Hunnam also stars as agent-runner Alec Leamas. The plot centers on Leamas recruiting Doris Quinz, a young East German woman, to smuggle Stasi documents into the West, igniting a perilous chain of events in Cold War Berlin. They are pursued by Stasi operatives Josef Fiedler and Hans-Dieter Mundt.
Idealistic Liz Gold, portrayed by Agnes O'Casey, becomes entangled as loyalties fracture and betrayal looms. The brilliant spymaster Smiley orchestrates events from behind the scenes, while the Soviet mastermind Karla remains a shadowy presence. The series explores how personal lives become casualties in a ruthless intelligence war.
"Legacy of Spies" is slated for release on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the U.K., and on MGM+ in the U.S. and several other international territories. Filming took place primarily in the Czech Republic, with additional location shooting in the U.K. and Germany.
