George Clinton's Mothership Returns for 50th Anniversary Tour

George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic are set to launch the third iteration of their iconic Mothership on July 5, 2026, at the ESSENCE Fest in New Orleans. This momentous occasion marks the prop's 50th anniversary, a symbol of Clinton's enduring influence in music. The original Mothership first appeared in October 1976, designed as a theatrical element for Clinton's "funk opera" vision.

The reimagined Mothership, recently inspected by Clinton in Nashville, is a near-exact replica of the 1976 version. It incorporates modern technology and lighter materials, a testament to Clinton's ability to evolve. At 84 years old, Clinton remains a ubiquitous presence in music, from Grammy performances to collaborations with hip-hop artists.

Clinton discusses the innovative nature of the original Mothership, inspired by theatrical productions of the era, and his vision for a "funk opera." He reflects on his musical journey from doo-wop and Motown to psychedelic rock and hip-hop, noting how funk served as the DNA for hip-hop. Sampling, he believes, gave his music a vital second life and helped him remain relevant.

The concept of Afrofuturism, which has roots in P-Funk's "outer space" music, has helped Clinton stay around. His collaborations with younger artists like Outkast taught him the importance of "One Nation Under a Groove." Clinton attributes his longevity to the energy of funk itself, stating his intention to "funk forever."
