Gaza Film Wins Top Award Amidst War

Palestinian director Hosam Abu Dan's film, Thirteen in Gaza, has been honored with the prestigious NETPAC Award at a Toronto festival. The film was shot entirely within Gaza, capturing the realities of life under wartime conditions with a local cast and crew. It marks the first feature-length production from Gaza since the Israeli military campaign began. The narrative follows Ragha, a 13-year-old girl who survives a missile attack that claims her home and family, and her father as they cope in a displacement camp.

Director Abu Dan was unable to attend the film's premiere in Toronto, addressing the audience remotely through a video message. He shared the profound challenges of creating the film amidst conflict, describing its production as being made "with blood" due to obstacles, including an injury to a colleague during filming. The film's production received support from the Doha Film Institute and the Arab Culture Fund.
