Summary
- Madras High Court dismissed the IT dept's case against Gautham Menon.
- Menon resigned as director of Photon Kathaas in 2011.
- The company failed to file IT returns for assessment year 2013-14.

The Madras High Court has dismissed the income tax department's prosecution against renowned film director Gautham Vasudev Menon. The legal action, initiated in 2019, concerned alleged non-filing of income tax returns by his production company, Photon Kathaas Production Pvt Limited, for the assessment year 2013-14. Menon was named as a third accused in the complaint.
Justice G.K. Ilanthiraiyan allowed Menon's plea, accepting the argument that he had resigned from his directorial position on May 2, 2011. This resignation predated the assessment year in question and was duly notified to the registrar of companies. Consequently, the court ruled that Menon could not be held vicariously liable for the company's financial reporting defaults during his absence.
