In November 2025, acclaimed actress Gargee RoyChowdhury made a triumphant return to the theatre stage after an eight-year hiatus, taking on the herculean task of portraying legendary actress Tara Sundari (1878 - 1948) in a powerful solo performance.
Gargee explained that despite Tara Sundari's brilliance and her once-ruling presence on the stage, very little information about her life and work has been archived. "She's a symbol of courage and grace who refused to bow to social stigma. Bringing her story to life is my tribute to her indomitable spirit," said Gargee.
The actress revealed that the stage demands a different rhythm and energy than the camera, and she had to fully immerse herself in Tara Sundari's world to do justice to the character. "On stage, you live the character in real time, and that honesty connects instantly with the audience," Gargee explained. Holding the audience's attention for over an hour and 18 minutes in this age of short-form content was a personal triumph for the actress.
