GameStop Declares Your Old Consoles 'Retro'
18 Mar
Summary
- GameStop now classifies Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U as retro.
- The retailer cited the lack of Fortnite and Bush-era releases as factors.
- A trade-in offer for retro consoles runs until March 21.

GameStop has recently updated its classification standards, labeling the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U as retro consoles. This designation places these seventh- and eighth-generation systems alongside historical gaming artifacts.
The retailer's decision was reportedly based on criteria such as the inclusion of component cables and the fact that these consoles were released during the George W. Bush administration. While the Wii U's release predates the end of the Bush presidency, the article notes that the consoles' age, with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 nearing 20 years old, lends merit to the 'retro' status.
In conjunction with this reclassification, GameStop is running a limited-time trade-in promotion. Customers can receive an additional 10% in trade-in credit for the newly designated retro consoles, as well as any older gaming hardware. This offer is valid until March 21.
Furthermore, GameStop has revised its trade-in policy for retro consoles. The company will now accept defective units, provided they can still power on, even if they are non-operable, missing accessories, or show significant wear. This adjusted policy also applies to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U.
