A documentary titled 'Psalms of the People,' focusing on Gaelic psalm singers from the Borders, is scheduled to premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival this Sunday. The film chronicles the musical journey of Rob MacNeacail, which began in Carlops.
The initiative to form the psalm group originated from a memorial service for Rob's father, the acclaimed poet Aonghas Dubh MacNeacail, who passed away in 2022. Rob felt Gaelic psalms should be a part of the proceedings.
Filmed by Jack Archer, the documentary explores the group's development and their unexpected popularity in an area not traditionally associated with the Gaelic language. Rob expressed his delight with the finished film, noting it respectfully celebrates Gaelic psalms and honors his father's connection to the tradition.
MacNeacail highlighted the inclusive nature of Gaelic psalms, observing their appeal to various community members, including adults with learning difficulties. He also noted the growing interest in the Gaelic language across Scotland due to its cultural richness and cognitive benefits.
While admitting to nervousness about the premiere, Rob MacNeacail expressed pride in the project, especially looking forward to seeing his fellow Carlops residents featured on the big screen.
