Barrow's Arts Hub Thrives in Submarine Town

Full of Noises, an experimental music and arts venue, is thriving in Barrow-in-Furness, a Cumbrian town historically known for submarine construction. Initially launched in 2009 from a temporary space, it has since established a permanent home in Piel View House, a former park keeper's lodge. The venue, known for its intimate capacity of 40, has hosted acclaimed artists such as Julia Holter and Lonnie Holley.

The venue programmer ensures visiting artists feel at home, offering communal meals and a welcoming atmosphere. This dedication extends to future plans for artist accommodation, pending further funding. The initiative is supported by a unique financial arrangement, including a long-term peppercorn rent lease from the local authority and significant Arts Council England funding.

This support has enabled Full of Noises to present over 60 events annually, with most tickets priced at £5 or pay-what-you-feel. This inclusive model fosters community engagement and showcases diverse artistic performances, from experimental music to film screenings and workshops. The venue's name is inspired by Shakespeare's The Tempest, reflecting its unique charm and ability to create delight.

Full of Noises showcases emerging talent alongside established names, recently hosting graduates from London College of Communication. Its existence highlights the potential for vibrant arts scenes to flourish even in industrial and isolated locales, challenging conventional notions of where artistic innovation can occur.
