24 Mar
Summary
- Rome's first queer film festival features renowned directors and actors.
- The festival's name, Frocinema, reclaims a derogatory term with irony.
- A shorts film competition offers €15,000 for fiction and €10,000 for documentary.

Rome's inaugural queer film festival, Frocinema Fest, is set to significantly enhance its international standing with its upcoming third edition. The event will present an expanded schedule featuring film screenings, workshops, and engaging talks.
The festival commences on March 30, with notable figures such as Robin Campillo presenting his AIDS activist drama "BPM (Beats Per Minute)". Céline Sciamma will attend the Italian premiere of her re-edited "Tomboy", and Zackary Drucker will introduce the European premiere of her HBO documentary "Enigma".
Frocinema's name is derived from the cultural re-appropriation of the term 'frocio,' which has been reclaimed from its derogatory origins to become a symbol of queer identity. The festival is organized by LGBTQIA+ activist Pietro Turano in collaboration with Arcigay Roma and Piccolo America.
This year's edition includes a competition for short film projects, offering a €15,000 grant for fiction films and a €10,000 prize for documentary projects. The festival will conclude with a special outdoor event on June 12, 2026, in Piazza di San Cosimato.
