Summary
- Omar Sy stars in Netflix's "French Lover", a romantic comedy about a famous actor
- Sy was careful to avoid caricaturing the French entertainment industry in the film
- Sy says he faces more racism in France than in the US as a Black Muslim

In the Netflix romantic comedy "French Lover", which launched globally on September 26, 2025, French actor-producer Omar Sy stars as Abel Camara, a famous yet jaded actor who unexpectedly falls for a down-on-her-luck waitress. Sy, who won a César Award 15 years ago for his role in the 2009 film "Intouchables", says his biggest challenge was depicting the French showbiz world without making it a caricature.
Sy, who also produced the film through his banner Korokoro Productions, worked closely with first-time director Nina Rives to strike the right balance between satire and tenderness in portraying the ups and downs of a celebrity's life. The movie reteams Sy with Hugo Gélin, who previously directed him in the French box office hit "Two Is a Family" and served as artistic producer on "French Lover".
In a recent interview, Sy, who lives between Paris and Los Angeles, addressed the issue of racism, stating that "as a Black Muslim, I experience much more racism in France than in the United States." The outspoken actor and producer, who is also involved in the upcoming fourth season of the hit Netflix series "Lupin" as a co-showrunner, is next set to star in the film "Dumas: Black Devil" about the first Black leader in the French military.
