Frank Grillo Finds New Lease on Life Through Psychedelics and Sobriety

In the past two years, veteran actor Frank Grillo has undergone a remarkable transformation. The 60-year-old, who has appeared in over 100 films and TV shows, including major roles in the Marvel and DC franchises, credits giving up alcohol and experimenting with psychedelics for a newfound sense of clarity and openness in his life and career.

Grillo, who grew up in a chaotic household in the Bronx, has long been driven by a working-class chip on his shoulder. However, he says that removing alcohol from his lifestyle and trying substances like Bufo toad venom have helped him achieve a greater sense of equanimity and connection. "It's given me an openness about acting and a sense of patience about my career. I really feel grounded and accepting in a way that I didn't for so much of my life," he explains.

Grillo's sons, ranging in age from 17 to 28, have also shown interest in following in their father's footsteps in the entertainment industry. While Grillo acknowledges that his name may open some doors for them, he insists that they'll need to bring their own talent and discipline to succeed. "Being somebody's kid might help open the door, but if they don't have talent or discipline — or at least something special — they're not going to last more than a few seconds in this business," he says.

As Grillo looks to the future, he's focused on spending more time with his family and continuing to explore new creative challenges, unencumbered by the weight of his past.
