Frances Stonor Saunders: Unmasking Cold War Espionage

Frances Stonor Saunders, celebrated for her 1999 book "Who Paid the Piper?", died at age 60. The book meticulously detailed the CIA's extensive funding of cultural espionage during the Cold War, revealing the agency's covert support for numerous books, magazines, exhibitions, and concerts.

Saunders's groundbreaking research uncovered that many prominent intellectuals and artists of the era, including George Orwell and Jackson Pollock, were unknowingly involved in these operations. Her work established a new field of historical inquiry and achieved international acclaim, translated into 17 languages.
