Singer-songwriter Foy Vance's creative process underwent a profound shift following the death of his father, Hugh. Vance described his pre-bereavement songwriting as merely a "vehicle" for touring, but afterward, music became a "life raft." He found solace and inspiration by hearing his father's voice, effectively making him a "co-writer."
This emotional journey has culminated in Vance's seventh and latest album, "The Wake." This release is the final in a seven-album series honoring his father's memory. Vance, originally from Bangor, County Down, is recognized for his songwriting prowess, boasting fans such as Ed Sheeran and Sir Elton John.
Sir Elton John has expressed deep admiration for Vance, calling his hit song "Guiding Light" "the most beautiful song." He, along with Ed Sheeran and Keith Urban, marked the song's 10th anniversary. Vance's breakthrough came in 2013 with the acclaimed album "Joy of Nothing," earning him the inaugural Northern Ireland Music Prize.
He later signed to Sheeran's record label, Gingerbread Records, leading to numerous collaborations and tours. Vance even shared an Emmy win with Sheeran for their contribution to the "Ted Lasso" soundtrack. Vance stated that while his latest album marks a significant point in his grief journey, it is not his final work.
