Polygamy Survivor Exposes Abuse and Control in Lifestyle

In a recent episode of the TLC series, David, a 61-year-old former polygamist, openly expresses his frustration and criticism towards the polygamist lifestyle. David, who married former polygamist Christine in October 2023, reveals that his own siblings' choice to live that lifestyle has opened his eyes to its flaws.

David claims that his oldest sister was "mentally damaged" from her experience in polygamy, due to the mistreatment she faced from her husband. He further alleges that polygamist men "use it to control the women," punishing them for disobedience and pitting their wives against each other.

Christine, who split from Kody Brown in November 2021 after more than 20 years in a spiritual marriage, has also been vocal about her own ups and downs with polygamy. During the upcoming episode, David expresses his strong views, stating that the "majority" of polygamist men he has encountered "liked the attention" and "liked" when their spouses would "fight over them."

Janelle Brown, another former sister wife, acknowledges that there are "tragic stories in polygamy," but cautions against making broad generalizations about the entire religion. She suggests that the "secrecy and lack of empowerment for women" in polygamy has "sort of allowed some of those things to flourish."
