A century-old collection of over 100 letters, postcards, and envelopes detailing a forbidden love affair has been uncovered by English Heritage. The correspondence from the 1920s is between Dora Smith and Noel Murray "Fred" Pearson, occurring during Dora's marriage to her first husband.
These letters provide intimate insights into the passionate relationship, including the use of pet names and the evident depth of their affection. Dora, daughter of Witley Court's last private owner, Sir Herbert Smith, also mentioned daily life at the estate in her correspondence.
Originally discovered in a shoebox in the 1960s, the collection has only recently been acquired by English Heritage. The organization is now analyzing the letters to determine their historical significance and conservation needs, while also seeking public assistance to learn more about the lovers' later lives.
