Fifty years after a historic hockey confrontation, a new documentary titled "Cold War in Philly" will premiere this spring in Philadelphia. The film chronicles the January 11, 1976, game where the Philadelphia Flyers, known as the Broad Street Bullies, famously defeated the dominant Soviet Red Army team 4-1 at the Spectrum.
The documentary features interviews with Flyers legends such as Bobby Clarke, Bernie Parent, and Bill Barber, along with journalists and fans who experienced the event. Directed by local filmmaker Joe Amodei, the film explores the game's significance within the broader context of the Cold War, highlighting it as a clash of styles, cultures, and pride.
Premiere events are scheduled for May 27 at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre and the Philadelphia Film Center, with proceeds benefiting the Philadelphia Flyers Alumni Association. A theatrical release is planned for June, followed by a digital release in late summer or early fall. The film aims to honor the aging players and commemorate one of hockey's most remarkable moments.
