Matīss Kaža, producer and co-writer of the Oscar-winning animated feature "Flow," has joined "Insectarium," the anticipated feature debut from Mexican stop-motion artist Sofia Carrillo. Kaža will serve as a producer, alongside Daniela Mujica's Montreal-based Productions Ocho. They join existing producers Pimienta Films from Mexico and Spain's Inicia Films.
"Insectarium" is set in a world where insects have gone extinct. The narrative centers on an entomologist's niece who accidentally reanimates an Attacus Atlas moth. This feature is described as an extension of Carrillo's previous acclaimed short film, "Cerulia," exploring a similar aesthetic universe and employing the same puppets and sets.
Kaža is contributing €250,000 ($290,000) from the National Film Centre of Latvia. Mujica has secured support from Telefilm Canada and other soft money sources. This four-way international co-production involves significant partners from Mexico, Spain, Latvia, and Canada, strengthening the project's status in the animation world. Latvian 3D artists, many of whom worked on "Flow," are expected to contribute to "Insectarium."
