Steven Drozd, a long-time multi-instrumentalist for The Flaming Lips, has officially departed the iconic band after 33 years.
Drozd's exit followed a personal crisis in late 2024 that prompted him to step away from touring. He initially expressed a desire to remain involved in studio work, but disagreements with band leader Wayne Coyne regarding his future role led to a mutual agreement for him to step back entirely.
He joined the band in 1991 and was instrumental in co-writing their mainstream breakthrough, 'She Don't Use Jelly,' as well as critically acclaimed albums like 'The Soft Bulletin' (1999) and 'Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots' (2002).
Drozd had publicly acknowledged his departure on social media in December 2024, noting he had not performed live since October 12, 2024. A.J. Slaughter has since replaced him on the live circuit as of January 2025.
