25 Mar
Summary
- Dame Sarah Mullally is the first woman to become Archbishop of Canterbury.
- Girl choristers will perform in the service for the first time.
- Flower arrangements are the most sustainable in decades, using no floral foam.

Dame Sarah Mullally's upcoming enthronement as the Archbishop of Canterbury is a historic occasion, as she is the first woman to hold this 1,400-year-old office. The installation service, to be attended by over 2,000 guests including Royal Family members and international faith representatives, will take place at Canterbury Cathedral. This event also marks a significant moment for the Canterbury Cathedral Choir, with girl choristers set to perform as part of the choir for the very first time.
Beyond the groundbreaking appointment of Dame Sarah, the ceremony highlights sustainability efforts. The Canterbury Cathedral Flower Guild has crafted their most eco-conscious arrangements in decades. Sourcing foliage and blossoms locally from the cathedral precincts, friends' gardens, and their own, they have intentionally omitted floral foam. Instead, they are utilizing vintage 'Canterburys' – 30-year-old metal tube structures with wire mesh – to secure the displays, symbolizing new beginnings for the church and the incoming Archbishop.
