Sisters' Sahti Wedding Blunder: A Race Against Time

Finnish filmmaker Teemu Nikki's latest feature, '100 Liters of Gold,' chronicles the chaotic journey of two sisters renowned for their strong homebrew ale, sahti. When their sibling requests a substantial 100-liter supply for an upcoming wedding, the sisters initially agree. However, a lapse in judgment leads them to drink the entire batch themselves, creating a monumental hangover and a race against time.

Nikki, representing Finland for the second time in the International Feature Oscar race, initially considered a story about brothers but found it too cliché. Inspired by actresses Elina Knihtilä and Pirjo Lonka, he shifted focus. Knihtilä shared a personal connection to sahti, recalling childhood memories of its potent effects, while Lonka admitted to not having tasted it before the film, highlighting its complex nature.

The film aims to explore beyond a simple drinking comedy, with Nikki wanting to depict how a seemingly funny drinking story can quickly turn serious. The narrative delves into the cultural significance of sahti in Finland and the often-unseen consequences that can arise from such traditions, offering a blend of humor and cautionary undertones.
