Filmmaker's Immigrant Story Hits LA Shorts Fest

Gagandeep Singh Gill, a 26-year-old filmmaker with roots in Anand, India, has achieved a significant milestone as his film "Standing Up" was officially selected for the 30th LA Shorts International Film Festival. This festival is highly regarded globally and serves as a qualifying event for the Oscars and BAFTA awards.

Born in Mumbai and raised on the IRMA campus in Anand, Gill's film is a deeply personal narrative inspired by his experiences as an Indian immigrant in the United States and a pivotal chance encounter. His upbringing on the IRMA campus significantly influenced his storytelling, focusing on community and human connections.

Gill, who pursued engineering before studying filmmaking in Los Angeles, found inspiration for "Standing Up" during his own first stand-up comedy performance in Brooklyn. Despite initial stage fright, the experience and conversations with fellow comedians fueled the creation of a story about belonging and friendship. The film is a tribute to the people he met and his own journey.

"Standing Up" will premiere at the LA Shorts International Film Festival later this month. The festival has a strong track record, with numerous alumni going on to receive Academy Award nominations and wins, underscoring the significance of Gill's selection.
