Film Shoot Halts Cricket: Azad Maidan Controversy Erupts
6 Nov
Summary
- Film shoot forced postponement of interschool cricket matches.
- Ground used for commercial film despite prior disruptions.
- Sports department prioritizes commercial bookings over athletes.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has lodged a strong protest against the Maharashtra Sports Department's decision to permit a film shoot for Ranveer Singh's movie 'Pralay' at Azad Maidan. The commercial use of the historic sports ground has resulted in the postponement of Under-14 and Under-16 interschool cricket matches, sparking accusations of prioritizing commercial interests over grassroots sports development.
This marks the first instance of a feature film shoot at Azad Maidan. The MCA has questioned the lack of consultation and highlighted ongoing encroachments on the ground by Metro construction and the Mumbai Police. Concerns were raised about artificial grass being laid on the playing surface for the film's requirements, potentially damaging the ground used by aspiring international players.
The state government granted permission for the six-hour shoot for a fee of Rs 40,000. However, the MCA urged the department to prioritize scheduled sports fixtures, warning that allowing such shoots sets a concerning precedent. The Sports Department defended its actions, citing a Government Resolution that allows for non-sporting activities on the ground for up to 30 days annually.
The film's producer confirmed all clearances were obtained, emphasizing the bureaucratic hurdles faced by the film industry in Mumbai. 'Pralay' is a dystopian zombie action thriller starring Ranveer Singh and Kalyani Priyadarshan.
