UK's First Asian Woman Officer's Life Story

A film titled "A Winter's Lion" is currently in production, chronicling the life of PC Karpal Kaur Sandhu, who made history as the UK's first female Asian police officer. Sandhu began her service with the Metropolitan Police in 1971, joining at the age of 27 after a career as a nurse. Her life was tragically cut short two years later when she was fatally stabbed by her husband, who disapproved of her professional path. He was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment for her murder.

The film's director, Dhruv Bhatnagar, expressed a personal connection to Sandhu's struggles, noting a lack of British-Indian role models during his upbringing. Sandhu, born in Zanzibar in 1943 to a Sikh family, emigrated to the UK in 1962. She served at Hornsey and Leyton police stations during her tenure with the Met.

Dr. Parvinder Shergill, who is both a producer and playing the role of PC Sandhu, described it as a profound responsibility to portray such a trailblazer. She collaborated closely with Sandhu's family, who shared cherished memories, highlighting Sandhu's compassionate nature as a mother, wife, and nurse dedicated to community service.

Filming is taking place in areas where Sandhu served, such as Hornsey and Leyton, with an anticipated completion date of February 1, 2026, the anniversary of her joining the police force. The Metropolitan Police, including its Sikh Association, have been supportive of the production. "A Winter's Lion" hopes to offer a global platform for Sandhu's story and serve as a tribute to her pioneering efforts and a message of thanks to women currently serving in law enforcement. The filmmakers are aiming for a release next year.
