The film 'Deaf' has been honored with the LUX Audience Award, marking a significant achievement for European cinema and its commitment to diversity. The film, which premiered at the Berlinale in 2025, has garnered multiple accolades, including major awards at the Goyas for its lead actress Miriam Garlo and co-star Álvaro Cervantes.
Created in 2007, the LUX Prize seeks to support films that raise awareness of socio-political issues across Europe and encourage wider distribution. The selection process combines public votes with those of MEPs, each carrying equal weight. This year, for the first time, subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing were provided for all shortlisted films.
Director Eva Libertad expressed hope that the award would focus attention on the Deaf community and promote inclusion policies. "This extraordinary winning film is not just a worthy winner of this prestigious award, it is a textbook example of how to get audiences into cinemas to watch inspiring European films," noted Mike Downey, Honorary President of the selection panel.
The film has already seen international release in over 40 countries. Other shortlisted films included Brendan Canty's 'Christy' and Jafar Panahi's 'It Was Just An Accident,' among others. The LUX Prize initiative ensures subtitles in 24 EU languages for all nominated films, enhancing their accessibility across the continent.
