CBFC Slashes Certification Time to 18 Days
5 Feb
Summary
- Film certification time reduced to 18 days on average.
- New online system implemented by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
- Official time limit for film certification is 48 working days.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has announced a significant reduction in the time it takes to certify feature films. With the recent implementation of an Online Certificate System, the average certification period has dropped to 18 working days. This marks a considerable improvement compared to the previous lengthy processes.
This new average time is substantially less than the official 48 working days stipulated by the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 2024. Short films now see an even faster turnaround, averaging just 3 working days for certification.
The CBFC operates under the Cinematograph Act, 1952, and its associated rules. Over the past five years, from 2020-21 to 2024-25, the CBFC has certified 71,963 films. Modifications to content are only recommended if they violate statutory parameters.
