Dermot Mulroney has officially confirmed that a sequel to the beloved 2005 holiday film, The Family Stone, is in development. Speaking on The Tangle podcast, Mulroney revealed that a script has been written and that "a lot of the actors have said yes" to returning.
Mulroney, who starred as Everett Stone, specifically mentioned that costars Luke Wilson, Rachel McAdams, and Craig T. Nelson are on board. He shared that writer-director Thomas Bezucha "re-approached this storyline" following the passing of matriarch Sybil Stone actress Diane Keaton in October 2025. Mulroney praised the script as brilliant and hinted that the new film might be titled "The Families Stone."
Sarah Jessica Parker, who played Meredith Morton, had previously expressed excitement about the potential sequel in January, though she acknowledged the bittersweet nature of it given Keaton's absence. Bezucha had also been working on sequel ideas prior to Keaton's death, noting her profound impact on the original film and its cast. Mulroney teased that the sequel will reveal significant developments for the Stone family over the past two decades.
