Directed by the Spierig Brothers, "Fall 2: Deadpoint" escalates the high-stakes thrills with a new ensemble cast facing a perilous mountainside challenge in Thailand. The film successfully recaptures the vertiginous tension of its predecessor, "Fall," without feeling derivative.
Jax Hunter, older sister to the deceased Shiloh from the first film, agrees to honor Shiloh's legacy by attempting the Devil's Elbow, a treacherous plank walk. Accompanied by Shiloh's friend Luce, they enlist a guide, John, for the dangerous ascent.
Midway through their journey, an earthquake triggers an avalanche, separating the pair from their guide and leaving them stranded thousands of feet in the air. The narrative then focuses on their harrowing descent, battling not only the unforgiving environment but also their own internal conflicts and fears.
While the film delivers effective white-knuckle results and believable stunts, its script attempts to replicate the personal conflicts and narrative twists of the original. This duplication, along with a poorly timed third-act confrontation, somewhat hampers the overall survival thriller, though the performances of Harriet Slater and Arsema Thomas are notable.
Grace Caroline Currey briefly reprises her role as Becky from "Fall," hinting at future installments. Lionsgate, the distributor, appears to be strategically building this franchise, akin to their handling of "Open Water."
