Fake Pregnancy, Real Heartbreak: A Mother's Deception

A new docudrama, 'A Child of My Own,' debuting on Netflix on August 13, 2026, revisits the high-profile case of Eleonor Alejandra Marín Mendoza. In 2009, Mendoza, a 26-year-old from Mexico City, was arrested after leaving a hospital with a newborn baby girl she had claimed as her own.

The film, directed by Maite Alberdi, presents Mendoza's story as a stylized docudrama. It begins with a fairy-tale-like recreation of her fake pregnancy, emphasizing her deep desire to be a mother amidst societal and familial pressures.

Mendoza's past includes three miscarriages, which she kept secret due to fear of her husband's family's reaction. She claimed to have met another woman, Mayra, who agreed to give her the baby after birth.

Director Alberdi met Mendoza in a Mexican jail, where the viewer also encounters her, serving a 13-year sentence for kidnapping. Her husband, Arturo, was acquitted after initially being detained.

Mayra Navarro Vega, the baby's biological mother, disputes Mendoza's account, stating she never agreed to give up her child and that Mendoza approached her posing as a social worker.

Alberdi aims to explore the broader societal pressures on women to become mothers, questioning why someone would resort to such extreme measures. The film suggests Mendoza was a victim of a system that failed to provide adequate mental health support.

Forensic psychologist Dr. Norma Romero Sanchez notes that immense pressure in Mexico and Latin America for women to have children, combined with Mendoza's psychological profile, contributed to her elaborate deception.

As Mendoza was released in 2023, she stated she had come to terms with not being a mother, realizing her desire was largely to please others and that there is more to life.
