Summary
- Director Adam Wingard has exited the Face/Off sequel project.
- Paramount Pictures is now seeking a new director for the film.
- The original Face/Off starred John Travolta and Nicolas Cage.

The director's chair for the planned sequel to the iconic 1990s action film Face/Off is now open. Adam Wingard, who had been attached to both write and direct, has departed the Paramount Pictures project. This mutual decision occurred last summer, leaving the studio to seek a new visionary for the follow-up. Filmmakers are reportedly pitching their concepts for the continuation of the 1997 cult favorite, which originally starred John Travolta and Nicolas Cage.
Initially, a remake was announced in 2019 with Oren Uziel penning the script. By 2021, Wingard was brought on board to direct, working from a screenplay he co-wrote with Simon Barrett. Wingard's recent directorial work includes the A24 thriller Onslaught, as well as successful films like Godzilla vs. Kong.
The original 1997 film, directed by John Woo, captivated audiences with its premise of an FBI agent and a terrorist swapping faces through experimental technology. It achieved significant box office success and earned an Oscar nomination. Despite his departure, Wingard had previously expressed enthusiasm for the sequel's script, calling it "awesome" and a true continuation he had not previously imagined.
