Shaker Hymns Twisted into Otherworldly Soundscapes

Daniel Blumberg recently completed an intensely experimental musical score for Mona Fastvold's "The Testament of Ann Lee." This ambitious project involved a deep dive into the music of the Shaker religion, which Blumberg then fused with avant-garde improvisational singing styles. He aimed to capture the raw, communal essence of Shaker worship while infusing it with a modern, experimental edge.

The film's unique musical approach involved drawing inspiration from the rhythmic sounds of Shaker daily life and hymns. Blumberg strategically employed unconventional sonic elements, including distorted electric guitars and body sounds, particularly during moments of heightened spiritual intensity like an eclipse. This creative process was highly collaborative, involving extensive dialogue with the director and other key production members to ensure music, choreography, and action coalesced organically.

Blumberg's dedication was total, involving intensive recording sessions and even teaching Hungarian extras English phonetic for the songs. The score, comprising over 100 minutes of music alongside adapted hymns, also features original songs co-written with Fastvold. Blumberg described the year-long process as an immersive, all-consuming journey that yielded an unparalleled creative experience.
