Cohen Media Group is set to release Everybody Digs Bill Evans, an unconventional biopic about the legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans. The film will have an Oscar-qualifying run beginning December 4 at The Quad in New York City, with a wider release planned for January 9, 2027. This release strategy aims for awards season recognition, with distributor submissions planned for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.
Directed by Grant Gee, who won a Silver Bear for his direction at the Berlin Film Festival, the movie delves into Evans' struggles following the death of his trio's bassist, Scott LaFaro, in 1961. The tragedy occurred shortly after the recording of their seminal album, Sunday at the Village Vanguard. Anders Danielsen Lie portrays Bill Evans, while Bill Pullman and Laurie Metcalf play his parents who take him in as he battles grief and heroin addiction.
The film, adapted from Owen Martell's novel Intermission, has garnered critical praise. Following its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, it has been screened at various festivals, including the Mill Valley Film Festival and is next set for the Middleburg Film Festival. Early reviews have described the film as "extraordinary, intimate and gloriously experimental."
