Every Year After: Cast Denies 'Love Triangle' Accusations

The cast of the recently released show, 'Every Year After,' has responded to audience observations that its plot mirrors that of 'The Summer I Turned Pretty.' Aurora Perrineau, who plays Chantal, noted that while 'Every Year After' shares a similar emotional 'yearning,' it is fundamentally different, centering on adult characters and their experiences.

Perrineau further elaborated that the show primarily delves into the challenging conversations surrounding forgiveness between the characters Sam and Percy. She suggested that audiences would find the plot relatable due to the universal nature of these emotions. The series is based on Carley Fortune's novel, which follows Percy's return to her hometown, stirring memories of her first love, Sam.

The narrative skillfully alternates between Percy revisiting these significant memories and her teenage romance with Sam. A central conflict arises when Percy becomes involved with Sam's brother, Charlie, intensifying the drama. However, author Carley Fortune clarified that the story does not focus on a love triangle, emphasizing its deeper themes of belonging, personal growth, and the lasting influence of formative places and people.

'The Summer I Turned Pretty,' a popular romantic series, also streamed on Amazon Prime Video, concluded its final season in 2025. Its plot famously revolved around a love triangle involving Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah, distinguishing its narrative focus from 'Every Year After.'
