Ski mountaineers Jimmy Chin and Jim Morrison recently marked the release of the National Geographic documentary 'Everest: The Other Side' with a remarkable stunt. The duo rappelled down the side of a 12-story building on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California. This dramatic descent advertised the film, which opened in 551 theaters, including IMAX locations.
The documentary, co-directed by Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, focuses on Jim Morrison's extraordinary achievement of scaling the north side of Mount Everest and skiing down it, a feat previously unaccomplished. The film also navigates the personal tragedies Morrison faced, including the loss of his life partner, elite ski mountaineer Hilaree Nelson, in an avalanche in Nepal in September 2022.
Chin and Vasarhelyi's filmmaking journey shifted to honoring Nelson's memory and supporting Morrison through his grief. The documentary premiered at the Venice Film Festival, followed by screenings at Telluride and Toronto. Morrison described watching the film for the first time as an emotionally intense experience, reflecting on the shared tears with Chin and the profound act of reliving his journey.
Morrison's unprecedented four-hour ski descent from Everest required immense concentration. He expressed that such challenges connect him deeply to life's intention and fulfill his passion. He believes pushing human limits and building strong teams to achieve great things is valuable for humanity, and this film serves as a tribute to Nelson's legacy and their shared goal.
