Summary
- A 55.6-meter concrete statue of the Virgin Mary was unveiled in Konotopie, Poland.
- The statue is taller than Rio's Christ the Redeemer but shorter than one in the Philippines.
- Former Polish President Lech Wałęsa attended the consecration ceremony.

In the rural Polish village of Konotopie, a colossal statue of the Virgin Mary, measuring 55.6 meters (182ft), has been formally unveiled. This ecclesiastical sculpture is now considered Europe's tallest. Its consecration by a local bishop took place on Saturday, coinciding with the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The inauguration occurs as the Catholic church's public influence in Poland faces a decline, particularly among younger urban populations. Commissioned by local millionaires, the statue's remote location emphasizes its private backing.
During the ceremony, two helicopters showered the open-armed figure with rose petals. Bishop Krzysztof Wętkowski blessed the statue, urging attendees to "raise our gaze upwards to God and heaven." Among the guests was Lech Wałęsa, who credited his Catholic faith for his role in ending communism in Poland. He expressed, "I started with the Virgin Mary and I end with the Virgin Mary."
