16 Jun
Summary
- Series creator Sam Levinson aimed for epic landscapes and a Wild West feel.
- Cinematography shifted to 65mm film for grander, more expansive visuals.
- The final season explores adult realities five years after the previous events.

The third season of "Euphoria" marks a significant departure, trading the series' signature intimate, expressionist aesthetic for grand, epic landscapes.
Series creator Sam Levinson explained the shift, stating the characters are "leaving high school" to explore a wider world, influenced by Old Hollywood and a Wild West sensibility. This new direction features characters depicted as small within expansive frames, moving away from the subjective close-ups of previous seasons.
The visual evolution includes shooting on 35mm and eventually large-format 65mm film. Cinematographer Marcell Rév noted this choice renders spaces in an "epic way," a creative decision Levinson and Rév championed against industry pressure to maintain a successful formula.
Set five years after the last season, the characters now face adult realities. Rue Bennett, dealing with her addiction, undertakes a dangerous drug smuggling operation across the U.S.-Mexico border. Other characters like Maddy, Nate, and Cassie navigate the complexities of early adulthood and career aspirations.
The season also delves into the world of sex work, featuring scenes in a strip club. Cinematography in these sequences aimed to capture nuanced emotional moments, such as a new dancer reapplying makeup in harsh club lighting after an assault.
Levinson expressed pride in the season, describing it as "grand and operatic." He specifically highlighted Zendaya's performance, noting her physical commitment allowed for daring scenes like an SUV-border-wall sequence, which he likened to "Buster Keaton meets 'Jurassic Park.'" The finale is slated to be a nearly two-hour episode, concluding with Rue's tragic fate.
