Rue's Faith Journey: Drugs, Debt, and Divine Intervention
13 Apr
Summary
- Rue navigates a new path of faith while still deeply entangled with drugs.
- She owes a substantial debt to Laurie, forcing her into dangerous drug mule work.
- Rue seeks happiness through religion, contrasting with her past reckless behavior.

Five years after high school, Rue's life in Euphoria season 3 begins with a newfound interest in faith and happiness, seeking solace in God. This marks a shift from previous seasons' use of religious iconography for themes of love and loss.
Despite appearing sober, Rue is more entangled with drugs than ever. She owes Laurie a significant debt from a past drug deal gone wrong, a debt that nearly led to her trafficking. After escaping that fate, Rue is found by Laurie and forced into dangerous work as a drug mule to repay her obligation.
This dangerous role, where she carries illicit product across the U.S.-Mexico border, is known only to Faye, who is also engaged in the same risky activity. Rue's past brushes with death, including a near-fatal fentanyl experience, have not deterred her from taking life-threatening gambles.
Rue's exploration of faith is spurred by an encounter with a devout family and discussions with Ali, who challenges her interpretations of religious texts regarding sexual orientation. She also meets Alamo, a strip club owner, with whom she shares an affinity for women, further complicating her spiritual path.
The season seems poised to test Rue's newfound, black-and-white faith against the harsh realities of her circumstances, particularly in the sprawling desert landscapes. New episodes of Euphoria season 3 air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and stream on HBO Max.
