Ethan Hawke recently shared that he was nearly cast as Jack Dawson in the blockbuster film Titanic. However, he believes his own extensive commentary about the screenplay's brilliance ultimately cost him the role.
Hawke explained that instead of just performing the scene, he enthusiastically detailed his belief that the film would be a "work of staggering genius" and potentially surpass "Gone With the Wind" and "Star Wars." He recalled seeing director James Cameron's reaction, realizing his non-stop talking was not helping his chances.
Despite missing out on one of the biggest films in history, Hawke stated he believes the "cinema gods" made the correct decision in casting Leonardo DiCaprio. He has previously expressed doubts about his own ability to handle the massive fame that accompanied the movie, comparing DiCaprio's post-Titanic status to being "a fucking Beatle."
