Eric Idle's French Haven: From Python Chaos to Provence Peace

Eric Idle has documented his 50-year endeavor of transforming a humble shed into a beautiful French home in his new book, "Idle in Provence - A brief history of Thyme." The comedian acquired the property in the picturesque village of Cotignac in 1971, seeking tranquility away from the demands of "Monty Python's Flying Circus."

Cotignac, officially recognized as one of France's Most Beautiful Villages, provided an idyllic escape with its terracotta roofs and cobbled courtyards. The region offers a slower pace of life, deeply connected to nature and artistic creativity, contrasting sharply with the hectic world of comedy.

Over the decades, Idle's retreat, named La Haute Terrisse, became a haven for numerous celebrities, including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, David Bowie, and George Harrison. They were welcomed into this serene environment without fanfare.

Accommodations at the local Hotel Lou Calen offer a sustainable retreat, featuring a Michelin Green Star restaurant and a unique pastis bar. The hotel also supports local artists by housing a bookshop, where Idle signed copies of his memoir.
